Plants As Healers-Our Hapé/Rapé Medicine

A Sacred Collection of Hapé Medicine from the Amazon

At Collective Journey Art, we offer a carefully curated selection of Hapé blends sourced from 16 different Indigenous tribes across the Brazilian and Peruvian Amazon. Our Hapé Medicine is not merely a product; it is a living, breathing representation of the traditions, spiritual practices, and healing arts of these communities. Each Hapé blend is consciously crafted by the native families within their home villages, infused with prayer and intention, and is deeply connected to its cultural roots, the medicine lineage.

Every bottle of Hapé holds a unique essence whether for healing, grounding, or spiritual awakening. These blends serve specific purposes and bring meaningful energy, with each ingredient added with reverence and care to honor the wisdom passed down through generations.

The Sacred Medicinne Hapé or Rapé: A Healing Spirit

In the heart of our journey, we are reclaiming the sacred spirit of plants, one of the most revered and misunderstood plants in modern culture. Through our Hapé Medicine, we invite the world to reconnect with this plant's spiritual essence—its ancient wisdom, and its healing power.

Hapé is far more than a powdered plant; it is a spirit. Indigenous peoples across North and South America have long honored the plant as a sacred offering to the Earth. Used in prayers, blessings, rites of passage, and ceremonies, the plant has been a vessel of connection to the divine, invoking protection, wisdom, and strength. It comes from the lungs of the Earth itself, offering healing to those who approach it with respect and intention.

Throughout history, healers known as ‘Tabaqueros’ in the Peruvian Amazon have used the nicotiana rustica plant, also commonly referred as mapacho in various forms to treat illnesses, from teas to snuffs. These Hapé blends, also known as Rapé (or Rappeh), carry the healing wisdom of the ancestors, bringing both physical and spiritual balance.

What is Hapé?

Hapé (also spelled Rapé or Rappeh) is a sacred powdered snuff made from mapacho mixed with the ashes of various plants, seeds, and tree barks. This powerful medicine is traditionally blown into the nostrils using a blowpipe, called a Kuripe for self-application or a Tepi for ceremonial use with a partner. The Hapé medicine originates from the Amazonian tribes, where it is considered not only a physical medicine but a spiritual tool for cleansing, grounding, and healing.

Pronounced as “rah-pay” in Spanish or “hah-pay” in Portuguese, Hapé is sacred—it is a tool for mental clarity, spiritual alignment, and deep purification. The blend of mapacho with tree ash is carefully prepared with prayer and intention. While mapacho contains significantly higher levels of nicotine than regular nicotiana tabacum, it is used with reverence for its grounding and clarifying effects.

Occasionally, additional ingredients like yopo, wilka, or flowers are included to enhance specific qualities such as visionary experiences, feminine energy, or spiritual guidance.

The Benefits of Hapé: Mental Clarity, Focus, and Healing

Hapé Medicine is revered not only for its physical benefits but also for its power to clear mental static and bring focus to the mind. When used in ceremonial contexts, it can open the spiritual senses, grounding the user and heightening their awareness of both their inner and outer worlds.

In traditional Amazonian cultures, Hapé is used before, during, and after ceremonies such as Ayahuasca or Kambo, helping to ground and center the participants. It is also used for personal rituals, to prepare for focused work, or even before hunting to sharpen the senses. The medicine connects us to the Earth, reminding us of the sacredness of our existence.

While some may experience physical purging or energetic releases, these processes are seen as deep healing, signifying the removal of obstacles and the integration of wisdom.

Using Hapé with Intention and Reverence

The potency of Hapé is amplified when used ceremonially. Opening a sacred space, setting an intention, and invoking blessings are all part of the process. Whether you’re using it for personal grounding, spiritual cleansing, or deep ceremonial work, Hapé helps to align and balance your energy.

Here’s a simple guide for a hapé ceremony:

  1. Prepare your space: Create a calm, sacred environment, sitting on floor, free from distractions. Smudge the space if desired.
  2. Set your intention: Feeling the support of the Earth beneath, Focus your mind on your goal, whether it’s healing, grounding, or spiritual clarity.
  3. Prepare the medicine: For beginners, we recommend a pea-sized amount of Hapé for each nostril, poured onto your palm first.
  4. Use the blowpipe: Whether using a Kuripe or a Tepi to serve someone, scoop the medicine from your palm into your applicators with the tip of it that will go to the entrance of your nostril(s)
  5. Take three deep breaths  before applying: taking one breath to ask the blessing of father sky, raising your loaded kuripe or tepi towards the sky,  exhale. Take second breath ask for the blessings of Mother Earth bringing your loaded applicator to touch the ground, exhale fully. Take a third deep breath, to the top of your lungs while bringing your loaded applicator close to your heart, hold that breath before applying the Hapé.
  6. Bringing the your applicator to the entrance of the nostril, keeping in mind your goal is to get the medicine up on the upper bridge of your nose, below through your applicator for 2-3 seconds then a final push (harder blow) to make sure nothing left in your blow pipe.
  7. Surrender & Breathing through the mouth: After applying the Hapé, do not resist to impacts, breathe only through the mouth as the medicine settles into your system.
  8. Avoid blowing your nose for 10-15 minutes: Despite the tendency do not blow your nose, instead wipe it as needed until everything on your upper respiratory system feels so liquids, spitting out or swallowing hapé are both okay. "Aho, Mitakuye Oyasin"!

A Unique Collection of Hapé Blends

At Collective Journey Art, we are proud to offer a range of Hapé blends that serve various purposes, from cleansing and grounding to enhancing vision or invoking protection. Our blends are crafted by Indigenous healers, each designed with specific healing qualities and spiritual properties.

Some blends, like Rose Hapé from the Huni Kuin and Nunu Hapé from the Matses, are nurturing and gentle, invoking a feminine, heart-centered energy. Others, such as Mulateiro Hapé and Murici Hapé, carry a more masculine force, promoting focus, courage, and strength.

Each blend activates different energy centers within the body. For example, some Hapé blends are known to open and activate the third eye or crown chakra, allowing for deeper spiritual awareness and clarity. Others, such as the grounding Murici or Mulateiro, connect you with the Earth, helping to root and center your energy.

Honoring the Source of Our Hapé or Rapé Medicine

The journey of Hapé medicine is personal for us at Collective Journey Art. Our founder, Su-Ata Ongun, first encountered this sacred medicine in Peru in 2012, during a transformative period in his life. His experience with a Tabaquera (tobacco healer) was a turning point—this encounter introduced him to the profound power of Hapé as a spiritual and healing tool.

Since then, Su-Ata has worked closely with the Matses tribe, learning the ancient traditions of Hapé preparation and its ceremonial use. His deep connection with the medicine has led Collective Journey to collaborate with nine different Indigenous tribes, including the Yawanawa, Huni Kuin, Matses, Nukini, Katukina, and others. Each of these communities carries a unique relationship with Hapé, and through them, we offer a diverse collection of sacred blends.

We are honored to be caryying and offering this medicine for nearly a decade to bring this ancient medicine to our growing community, and we are committed to maintaining our connection with the INative medicine families we work with. The wisdom of these sacred plants is a powerful tool for healing, grounding, and spiritual growth, and we are proud to share this medicine with you.
